Developmental Milestones and How They Impact Sleep

Watching your baby learn new skills is one of the best parts of being a parent. From rolling to walking, the excitement when they hit new milestones is the same whether they’re your first or fifth baby.


As much as we look forward to these stages, you may notice that as your little one goes through their major physical milestones that their sleep becomes disrupted.


Rolling

Most babies will roll from belly to back first then from back to belly a couple of months later. Once your baby starts to show signs of rolling onto their stomachs you will need to transition them out of their swaddle. This can be done over a few days to a week. If they are still swaddled when they start rolling back to belly you will need to remove the swaddle immediately as it will no longer be safe.


It's best practice to always lay your baby down to sleep on their back. Once your baby is rolling on their own it is safe for them to sleep on their stomachs if they roll into that position themselves. Make sure their sleep space is free of any loose blankets, toys or bumpers.

Sitting, Crawling, Standing, Walking

All of these activities are a lot more fun than sleeping. When your baby first learns these skills, they are going to want to practice ALL THE TIME, including at bedtime and in the middle of the night.


If they are happy in their cot it's ok to leave them, don't worry that they aren't sleeping. If they do start to cry out, go in and encourage them to lay back down but remember not to assist them all the way back to sleep.


Allow them plenty of time during the day to practice their new skills so they are less likely to want to practice when it's time to sleep and you should see their sleep go back to normal in just a few days.
